Somalia and Turkey have strengthened their cooperation in various areas, including environmental matters.
This emerged on Thursday following a meeting between Khadija Mohamed Al-Makhzoumi and Ambassador Alper Aktas.
Al-Makhzoumi, the Minister of Environment and Climate Change, hosted Turkish Ambassador Aktas at the ministry’s headquarters in Mogadishu.
Both countries share a commitment to addressing climate change, environmental degradation, and sustainable development challenges.
Turkey has been actively involved in supporting Somalia’s environmental sector through initiatives such as reforestation, sustainable water management, and capacity building for environmental governance.
These efforts aim to help Somalia mitigate the effects of climate change, such as droughts and desertification, which have severely impacted the country.
In addition, both countries explore collaboration on renewable energy projects, such as solar and wind power, to promote sustainable energy solutions that align with environmental goals.
Al-Makhzoumi and Amb. Aktas also discussed the need for collaborating on issues pertaining to the 2024 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29), which will run from November 11-22, 2024 in Baku, Azerbaijan.
