Somaliland pastoralists continue to embrace crop cultivation as climate change-induced drought bites across the land.

Last year, thousands of pastoralists in Hawd region took up crop cultivation.

They cited prolonged drought brought about by climate change as the main reason for ditching their pastoralist lifestyle.

A year later they can smile all the way to the bank after enjoying great harvests.

Some of the crops they cultivated last year include sorghum, watermelon, tomatoes, and maize.

Recurrent drought cycles made their overreliance on livestock farming untenable.

Moreover, the drought destroyed thousands of herds of cattle for the pastoralists. Goats, camels, and sheep were not spared either.
