The discussion at the Security and Climate Change Conference, organized by the Office of the National Coordinator (ONC) and the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change of Somalia, focused on the pressing link between climate change and security in Somalia.
According to Khadija Mohamed Al-Makhzoumi, the Minister of Environment and Climate Change, the projections presented at the conference were stark.
She said that experts predict a potential 3°C rise in temperature by the year 2100, which could result in the displacement of 3.8 million people.
The minister was among participants at the conference that kicked off on Monday in Mogadishu.
Deputy Prime Minister Salah Jama opened the conference officially while also delivering the keynote address.
These figures highlight the critical need for immediate and coordinated action to mitigate climate impacts, address vulnerabilities, and build resilience among communities across Somalia.
This intersection of climate change and security poses significant challenges for governance, resource management, and social stability in the region.
