The La NiƱa climate phenomenon is anticipated to result in significant rainfall deficits across Somalia, severely impacting the October-December Deyr seasonal harvest for 2024/25.
This could exacerbate food insecurity in the region, particularly in areas already grappling with the effects of recurrent droughts and conflict.
In response to this looming crisis, Giles Conway, the Humanitarian Coordinator for Somalia, has allocated $5 million from the Somalia Humanitarian Fund (SHF).
This allocation complements an additional $5 million from the United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF), targeting urgent and dignified interventions in the most at-risk areas.
These funds aim to mitigate the impact of the rainfall deficit by supporting early actions such as the provision of water, food assistance, and agricultural inputs to prevent further deterioration of livelihoods and food security in vulnerable communities.
