The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) says that central Somalia could experience heavy rainfall and floods from April 27 to May 4.

IGAD said this on Friday after issuing a statement on the ongoing floods in Kenya.

As per its statement, the heavy rains will not be limited to central Somalia only.

Instead, IGAD expects the trend to be witnessed in southern Ethiopia, northern Uganda, and western Kenya.

According to IGAD’s Climate Prediction and Applications Center (ICPAC), the Jubba-Shabelle region in Somalia remains a hotspot.

Consequently, it urges authorities to take measures to avoid loss of life and damage to property as a result of the impending floods.

Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, IGAD’s Executive Secretary, called on member states to collaborate in addressing effects of climate change in the region.

Specifically, Dr. Gebeyehu called for implementation of adaptation and mitigation strategies to reverse the impact of climate change.
