The Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) has banned single-use plastics in its bid to reduce the harmful effects of climate change.

Consequently, Somalia has become the latest country around the world to launch a fierce campaign against the use of non-biodegradable packaging materials.

Khadija Mohamed Al-Makhzoumi, the Minister of Environment and Climate Change, made the announcement banning the plastics on behalf of the Somali government.

She added that all importers and manufacturers have until June 30, 2024 to comply.

The ban would come into effect then.

Once the date expires, nobody will be allowed to either import or manufacture single-use plastic bags in Somalia.

In the meantime, Somalia would look for environmentally friendly alternatives with other stakeholders.
