Somalia’s proactive measures against deforestation, highlighted by Hassan Hussein Mohamed at the Food and Agriculture (FAO) 27th Session of the Committee of Forestry in Rome, emphasize the nation’s commitment to combating environmental degradation and climate change.

Mohamed, in his capacity as the Minister of Livestock, Forestry, and Range, outlined strategies that Somalia has instituted to enhance sustainable agricultural and livestock management practices.

In his address, he emphasized the need for reducing the negative impacts of environmental degradation and addressing climate change.

He touched on the sustainable agricultural and livestock management practices the Somali government has implemented to improve food security and livelihoods.

The integration of advanced technologies to boost agricultural productivity as well as the effective management of pests and rangelands to sustain agricultural output featured prominently in the minister’s speech.

He assured FAO of ongoing collaboration with Somalia to support agricultural productivity and resilience against climate impacts.

The minister addressed strategies aimed at mitigating challenges such as droughts and floods, which have been the norm in Somalia for the past five or so years. Droughts and floods have caused a debilitating humanitarian crisis in the East African nation.

This comprehensive approach is designed to ensure sustainable agricultural practices, increase productivity, and mitigate the impacts of environmental challenges, thereby bolstering Somalia’s food security and resilience.
